Environmental Scans of Alcohol & Tobacco Retailers
Trained volunteers conduct observational scans at retailers across Henry County to assess how alcohol and tobacco products are marketed and accessed. Findings inform education and outreach efforts aimed at reducing youth exposure and access.
** These scans are educational and non-enforcement-based, designed to help us better understand the local environment and identify any factors that may contribute to underage use.
Key Components and Objectives of Environmental Scans for Alcohol & Tobacco Retailers:
Assessing the Retail Environment:
This involves directly observing and documenting the physical environment of retail stores and establishments selling alcohol and tobacco products.
Understanding the "4 Ps"
Scans often focus on the marketing mix of Price, Product, Promotion, and Placement to identify how these factors might influence consumer behavior, especially concerning youth access and consumption.
Identifying Risk and Protective Factors:
Scans aim to identify elements that contribute to or protect against alcohol and tobacco use and misuse, such as specific advertisements, product displays, or the density of retailers.
Informing Policy and Intervention:
The data gathered from environmental scans is used to inform local and state-level policies, develop targeted prevention strategies, and guide community efforts to reduce harm associated with alcohol and tobacco.
Examples of What to Observe:
This includes noting alcohol and tobacco advertising on windows, walls, and displays; the placement of products near non-alcoholic or candy items; the presence of promotions or discounts; and the overall marketing strategies employed by retailers.
Broader Considerations:
Environmental scans also consider factors like tobacco retailer licensure, regulations, and the density of retail outlets, which can significantly impact public health outcomes.
